List Agreement Grammar: How to Use Parallel Structure for Perfect Lists
When creating a list, it’s important to structure it correctly to ensure maximum clarity and readability. One of the key elements of list creation is using parallel structure, also known as parallelism. This means that the items in the list should be phrased in a consistent manner, using the same grammatical form and structure. This not only makes the list easier to read, but it also makes it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Here are some tips for incorporating parallel structure into your lists:
1. Use the same part of speech for all items in the list. For example, if the first item is a verb, make sure that all other items are also verbs. If the first item is a noun, all other items should be nouns too.
Example:
Not-Parallel:
– I like running, hiking, and to swim.
Parallel:
– I like running, hiking, and swimming.
2. Keep verb tense consistent throughout the list. If you are using a present participle (ending in -ing), make sure to use it for all items in the list. If you are using a past tense verb, use it consistently throughout the list.
Example:
Not-Parallel:
– We ran, jumping over the fence, and we will walk to the park.
Parallel:
– We ran, jumped over the fence, and walked to the park.
3. Match the grammatical structure of the items in the list. If the first item is a sentence, make sure all other items are sentences too. If the first item is a phrase, ensure that all other items are phrases as well.
Example:
Not-Parallel:
– She loves shopping, going to the movies, and that she is a great dancer.
Parallel:
– She loves shopping, going to the movies, and dancing.
4. Use the same grammatical pattern for all items in the list. If the first item is in the form of a question, make sure that all other items are also in question form.
Example:
Not-Parallel:
-Ellie wants to know what kind of music people like, how to dance, and the best places to eat.
Parallel:
-Ellie wants to know what kind of music people like, how to dance, and where the best places to eat are.
By incorporating parallel structure in your lists, you can create clean, well-organized content that guides readers effortlessly through your ideas. Remember, consistency is key! Utilize these tips to create grammatically correct and visually appealing lists that will enhance your writing and keep your readers engaged.
